Welcome to the
Farningham  &  Eynsford
Local History Society

Welcome to the Farningham and Eynsford Local History Society Web Site.

Background

The Society was formed in 1985 by a small group of enthusiasts anxious to research and preserve the history of their locality before it was lost as a result of the increasing pace of life and the throw-away society in which we now live. The Society rapidly grew to about 100 members. Its area of interest covers the ancient parishes of Eynsford (including Crockenhill), Farningham and Lullingstone, and also Maplescombe.

Purpose

The purposes of the Society can be broadly described as follows:

  • To carry out historical studies on the local area, from documents and oral sources, and on the ground. These might involve a considerable effort or only a few days' work.
  • To publish the results of the above studies.
  • To collect and preserve either originals or copies of any documents related to the area, including books, newspaper cuttings, letters, maps, postcards, deeds, programmes and hand bills - in fact any physical record of the activities of the inhabitants of the area.
  • To hold meetings for the presentation and discussion of historical topics, display of documentary and other materials, etc.

Membership

Membership is open to anyone interested in the history of the area - not only those living there. The annual subscription is £9 (£14 for a family, or Life Membership for £90). Further membership information is available from the Membership Secretary.
